Why do Routine suspension maintenance you might ask? The suspension on your bike has many moving parts bathed in oil. Aside from the obvious sliders or shafts running inside bushings and seals, you have a rebound piston moving up and down in your fork rubbing on the walls of your cartridge. Most forks have two bushings on the outer tubes, some three. Your shock has one two or three pistons moving constantly. Your rebound piston, compression pistons and shock pistons plus some high speed compression adjusters have shims rubbing against each other with each movement of your suspension. Plus, as your suspension moves microscopic debris intrudes into your components through your seals. What does this add up too? Sludge, wear, and inconsistent performance. This is why routine maintenance is so important. After your first 15 hours on a new bike and every 40 hours afterwards you should have your suspension serviced or service it yourself. This service should include a complete teardown and cleaning including total disassembly and cleaning of all the valving (you would be surprised at how dirty it gets between the shims), inspection of all components and replacement of any worn parts. And a refill of new high quality suspension fluid. While you have your shock off you should grease your linkage pivot bearings, swingarm bearings and wheel bearings. While your forks are off grease your steering head bearings. If any bearings need replacement do it now. A proper suspension service will make your bike feel new again, enhance your riding experience and if feels soooo good. Greg |
